By default Windows Vista allocates 15%-20% of your hard drive to storing System Restore points - which turns out to be a couple dozen gigabytes on a large drive. The user-friendly Windows XP slider bar which sets System Restore space has disappeared on Vista; instead a little command line action's required to reset this percentage.
To recover some of that System Restore disk space, start up Vista's command line as an administrator, and run vssadmin list shadowstorage to see the current allocation. To change it, use:
vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[drive]: /for=[drive]: /maxsize=[size]
To limit System Restore to 1 gigabyte on the C: drive, use:
vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=C: /for=C: /maxsize=1GB

Remove Vista Optional Features you do not need
If you installed Vista yourself and have experience installing previous Windows OSes, you surely noticed that Vista hardly asks any questions about your computer—and what you plan to do with it—than did prior OSes. Windows Vista makes all kinds of assumptions about your computing habits and the features you may or may not need, and it inevitably installs some overhead that you simply don't need. You can get rid of it. Windows XP had the Add/Remove Windows Features button in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet, and Vista has something like it.
1. Press the windows key and type in optionalfeatures.exe and press enter
You will see this..
2. Check the list of features. Each feature has a checkbox which, if filled, indicates the feature is installed. If you hover the mouse over a feature, a help tooltip appears to tell you what it is.
3. Uncheck any feature you don't need. Some of the features are headings with a sub-list below them; just click the little + sign to expand.
Here is a tip, if you dont know what it is, you dont need it.

Stop hibernation and remove hiberfil.sys from your Vista root directory
When you use hibernate in Vista it creates a file called hiberfil.sys. This file can grow rather large, you may have noticed that hibernation is also enabled by default when you install Windows Vista. If you don't use hibernate, the hibernate file hiberfil.sys is sometimes large enough to impact the amount of drive space you have available, and you're not able to delete it because it's in use, quite the same like in Windows XP. Because Windows keeps this file similar to the system state you can imaging that when you don't use hibernation in Vista it's a waste of system performance and a waste of system resources.
How to disable hibernation in Windows Vista:
1) To be able to get rid of this file you have to shutdown and disable hibernation in Windows Vista. You can do this by opening a command prompt as administrator.
2) press windows key then type in cmd, In the command prompt type "powercfg -h off", it should give you no message back, there is "no errors", it does not echo the results back to us, but the job is done.
After this Windows Vista will automatically shutdown hibernation and removes the hiberfil.sys from your Vista system root directory saving allot of space, sometimes up to 2 gigs!
